Dr Robert Bruce Barrow was born in Montrose, Scotland in 1970. His father Dr. Brian Barrow was specialising in Orthopaedics in Edinburgh at this time. Robert's father and 2 older brothers are Orthopaedic Surgeons and are in a group practice at Sunninghill Hospital. His younger brother is a Gastroenterologist at Donald Gordon Medical Centre. Robert's Grandfather was a well known General Practitioner in Central Johannesburg.
Robert attended junior school at St. Peter's Preparatory School in Johannesburg and then went on to boarding school at St. Andrews College in Grahamstown. He finished at College in 1988. Robert studied Medicine at the University of Witwatersrand and graduated in 1995. After completing his internship at Helen Joseph Hospital, he spent a year working in the United Kingdom in Hip Arthroplasty.
After coming back to Johannesburg, Robert spent time assisting his Father, Dr Brian Barrow; Professor Frans Weber at Mediclinic Sandton as well as Dr Mike Sara at Linksfield Clinic before starting his Orthopaedic rotation. All these surgeons were doing a lot of joint replacements. Robert's interest in Arthroplasty continued to grow.
Robert specialized in Orthopaedics at the University of Witwatersrand. He graduated as a Fellow of The College of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 2005. He worked the last year of his Orthopaedic specialization at Johannesburg Hospital in the well known Wits University Arthroplasty unit. At this time Robert started working with Professor Anton Schepers who at the time was the President of the South African Orthopaedic Association and Head of the Arthroplasty Association. Robert still operates with Professor Schepers at the Donald Gordon Medical Institute doing Arthroplasty.
Robert joined his father and brothers in private practice at Sunninghill Hospital in 2005. Robert started working with Dr Ian Dymond at Mediclinic Morningside from this time refining his skills in Arthroplasty and in 2009 formally moved to Mediclinic Morningside in order to further his interest in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty. As well as primary hip and knee replacements - Robert has a particular interest in complicated primary and revision Arthroplasty.
Dr Barrow is a keen runner and sportsman. He has recently received his Back to Back medal for running and completing the up and down Comrades marathon. He loves playing golf when he can fit a round in and is always keen for a game of tennis or squash. He is currently playing club hockey.
